The author made an alternate reality, where people he doesn't like get punished by the literal devil- publishers, Moscow intellectuals, the system. He identifies with the master who deserves a beautiful, younger, married woman-Margerita, as he believes the system wronged him. Everyone gets blinded by the aesthetics and Miyazaki-like magical realism, but it's really just another frustrated mans fantasy of what he deserves.
