It's not a problem if someone doesn't speak Serbian right away. Learning a language takes time and everyone gets that. The issue is something else entirely. If you open a cafe or a shop in Serbia, I should be able to order in Serbian. Everywhere I've traveled, our people who open a business abroad either learn the local language or hire someone who speaks it, because that's basic respect for your customers. Nothing else bothers me, just that.

I know a few Serbian people moved to Russia for work said they learned Russian in two months. That’s why I don’t get Russians not learning Serbian because it’s Slavic language

I’ll try to explain why Russians don’t learn Serbian (I can’t speak for people from other countries, and this is just my personal perspective). I’m Russian and I moved here to live, so I learned Serbian in advance, and now I speak it and go to Serbian places and activities — dance classes, Pilates, kafanas, clubs, etc. But there are Russians who decided for themselves that Serbia is only a temporary place for them. They either plan to go back to Russia once everything is over, or move on to the EU. But they’ve ended up “stuck” in Serbia, so some of them are only just starting to learn the language, some tried to get by using English, and some went through a long period of psychologically refusing to accept that they might actually need to learn Serbian. For some adults over 40, learning a new language can also be quite difficult. These are just my assumptions, though.

Once I went to a hookah place with some friends and didn't know it was a Russian place. He was staring at me like I was insane for ordering in Serbian in Serbia, dude if you own a business here, learn a damn language or hire a local person; it's so disrespectful to come to a different country and expect people to adjust to you.

I’ve been living in Serbia for more than six months, and many of my Russian friends speak Serbian at a decent B1-B2 level. Maybe I can speak for others, but we are all very grateful to the country and its people for accepting and welcoming us. Many people really make an effort to speak Serbian, a language they have learned over the last four years. Everyone has different reasons for not knowing it well, but a lot of immigrants genuinely try. I’m sorry you had to deal with people who behave inadequately and think that people in another country should speak Russian. These people are fucking insane. I’m really ashamed of my fellow Russians who act like that, but I want to assure you that there are more normal people. Not speaking the language perfectly is completely okay, especially considering that most of the migration happened over the last four years. Absolutely everyone knows how to say hello, thank you and goodbye, and everyone can communicate on at least a basic level, especially because we have so many similar words. Once again, I’m sorry for those who think Serbs are somehow supposed to speak Russian, but I want to assure you that there are more decent people.

as a person who works around people, it's tricky for me anytime i need to communicate with a Russian person. I feel like our languages are too similar for me to speak in English with them, but then it turns out they don't know a lick of Serbian either. WHAT DO U WANT FROM ME

I had a Russian couple come to the store i work in and guy asked me twice if i speak Russian and i said no both times. He continued to speak in Russian and said something to me that ofc I did not understand and it was rly awkward.

I feel like wherever you move to you should learn at least the BASICS, hello, how are you, my name is, or something you'll need in stores or perhaps to pay your bills, basics, if it's hard to learn, doesn't even need to be perfect pronunciation, just to understand, it's only polite, and logical, helps you and people around you that don't understand YOU on their turf, I agree with what you said :)

I came across two Russians 3 years ago, I did a mosaic for their wine bar when they moved to Belgrade. They just moved here at that time, didn’t speak Serbian at all, and English wasn’t the best. I visited the wine bar last week, both of them are now fluent in Serbian, and English. We sat for 2 hrs and spoke only Serbian. So I feel like it really depends on the person, like most things in life.

i literally went to vienna for a couple of days and spent a couple of weeks preparing to speak german bc i didn't want to seem absolutely ignorant once i got there. yeah,people speak english there,but not every single person does,and i didn't want to make it hard for them.

Many Hungarians and Albanians that live here theyr entire life don't know Serbian. So picking Russians as an example that live here for like 4 years is a bad choice.

Learning a new language doesn't just require a lot of time, but also a lot of money. Unfortunately, I don't have either to spare so far, and in my day to day life I encounter Serbian very rarely (I work in English and all my neighbours speak Russian even when they are Serbs), so I don't pick it up much. I understand it slightly, but I don't speak it much. It's not a "pose" or a refusal to learn. But as an immigrant I have my time and money occupied for other things and reasons for these past four years

I was complaining about this to my russophile mother bc some russians who refused to even talk in english tried complaining to my boss (obviously it did nothing) and she was telling me that it's not a big deal because "we can understand and learn russian it's so close to serbian" 💀

they should at least learn a few basic sentences in serbian, especially if they’ve started a business here (like a café). you literally need to know the language to take someone’s order wtf??? i’m not gonna speak english (or russian) to you in my own country just because you can’t be bothered to learn the language when you’re not even a tourist.

I moved to Belgium some years ago and I started learning Dutch the same week. Now I m learning French. It’s a normal thing. I would get bored every time saying to everybody “sorry, English please”. Russian and Serbian are both Slavic languages, it’s not that difficult.
