I could have 50 kind comments, but it’s the one that says I deserve to die because I didn’t save a dog that sticks with me the most. This post isn’t for sympathy, but for awareness. I know a lot of people don’t know what is going on and I know it can get confusing. People in rescue and shelter work face an unbelievable amount of hate from those who don’t truly understand what this is like. When volunteers meet a dog, it’s not just to post a “cute photo.” Most of the time, that post is the only shot that dog has at making it out alive. That’s how volunteers change lives. How many people are walking shelter kennels day after day, meeting every dog, learning their stories, advocating for them? Not many. So those who do have to get the word out. People are scrolling their phones, and that video that pops up on their feed might be the reason they step up to foster, adopt, or donate. Behind every one of these videos are messages between volunteers, tears, begging rescues, coordinating fosters, rides, and doing everything possible to save that one dog. We don’t post and move on, we carry it with us. I see my peers break down every single week because their favorite dog didn’t make it. And yet instead of support, so many of us get hateful, misinformed comments for even trying. Sometimes when they are euthanized it makes me feel like maybe I shouldn’t have posted them at all because of the extreme hate I get, as if it’s my fault. What we should focus on is why did this dog end up here? Why did someone abandon them? Why are shelters this full? Why are people still not spaying and neutering their pets? How can we help the shelters? How can we stop the cycle? Animal welfare isn’t for the weak, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have weak moments or get upset and overwhelmed. Support your local shelters and rescues! #adopt #rescue #shelterdog #houstontexas #fosteringsaveslives
