What is Matt Brown talking about exactly? I've said for a while that it feels like I'm a cat living in someone's house. I can feel that there are things going on behind the scenes keeping the lights on, keeping the dishwasher running, repairing the roof and siding to keep water out, etc. However, someone or something is actively keeping us in the dark on how these things work. Brown is taking several fairly understandable ideas, wrapping them in extremely abstract language, and then sliding between politics, epistemology, biology, consciousness, and metaphysics without clearly announcing when he’s changed subjects. It feels like he’s talking in circles. So annoying. Michaels is actually doing something useful in this sectioninterview. He keeps trying to pin Brown down: Are you talking about ordinary political/institutional control, or are you saying insiders literally know something about the fundamental nature of reality? Brown never quite gives him the clean “Yes, here's exactly what I mean” answer. The most intriguing phrase to me is actually “others most assuredly do.” If I were interviewing him, that's where I'd stop him immediately: “Who are ‘others’? Intelligence agencies? Defense contractors? UAP programs? And what specifically do they believe about consciousness?”Because without answering that, Brown can hover indefinitely between a fairly conventional critique of institutional power and an extraordinary claim about hidden knowledge concerning reality itself. And that is why this interview feels so maddeningly slippery.
