@kinacptsdtherapist: I’m actually leading a workshop in January called The Art of Listening that’s open to therapists and everyone else. We’ll be talking about the skills that help us truly attune to other people and connect with them more deeply and meaningfully, without bypassing or trying to manage their emotions. It could be a great resource for parents, people trying to break cycles in their families, people healing from emotional neglect, therapists, or really anyone who relates to this. You can get tickets on my website, KinaWolfensteinTraining.com.

This and can ya’ll also please stop pushing mindfulness exercises as if they are a hug from Jesus himself? If we are coming to you for CPTSD, we are WAYYYYY past the point of mindfulness exercises. We are in the zone of ketamine treatment, EMDR, and TMS. To suggest mindfulness exercises to a patient like me is very disrespectful and dismissive of my trauma, imho.

because they just want the ego boost of "helping" people without doing the actual work of actually being helpful

I got upset during a session and my therapist had me do the thing where you name five things you see and four things you hear etc. And since then I feel myself not wanting to show strong emotions because I took it as “corrective” like I did something wrong that needed managing. But fortunately I was able to talk to her about it but it seemed to surprise her. She explained they are trained to help people recover so they can continue the day not in distress. But I don’t need that. Im very experienced in pulling myself together but haven’t had the experience of expressing freely

I think a lot of us ARE trained to sit with clients and be present, but the increased pressure from insurance is overwhelming. Justifying “medical necessity” and demonstrating that therapy is “working” to prevent clawbacks in every dang session. I know I struggle to write my notes after I spent an entire session just letting a client cry, color, or tell a story and did it more than one week in a row. How do I describe this so I don’t get a clawback if they audit me? Some of my teens take months to open up, and I’m anxious about justifying those sessions to their payers despite knowing that this is a normal part of the process for folks with extensive trauma. It’s a constant push-pull between knowing what works and knowing how insidious insurance is becoming.

I’ve learned more about this ever since I learned that I have the gene that causes ALS which means I will definitely get the illness. Despite telling people this, they say “but maybe you won’t get it! Keep hope!” And I realize that in that moment, they’re saying that for themselves and their own comfort because they don’t know what else to say (who does? What is there to say?), and whatever that response is called is also a lot like what happens in the therapy room when people are suffering. In that context, I can sit in pain with people. It doesn’t scare me because i know what it feels like to have your pain mobilized so other people can swallow it.

That’s incredibly sad about how the system is structured. I find it hard therapists aren’t able to hold space, but also if there’s a rupture I’ve rarely had a therapist who has the ability for real repair. Is this taught during training? Maybe it’s similar rationale as this

I think social media plays a role too. Therapists will see social media posts where someone is talking about how their therapist responded (or lack thereof) & they overcorrect without added info or nuance. I tell my clients that most of the time we have to “sit in our shit” & I show them how to do that by just being present in their pain without trying to change anything unless they’re so outside their window of tolerance it’s starting to become harmful.

Decades ago I had to tell a baby therapist in licensure hours still, that she needed to not be shocked or pained by my trauma or I couldn’t work with her. - and she rose to the occasion and we were better together because of it.

I can say after years of therapy for childhood neglect and abuse I've become pretty disillusioned from mainstream therapy. I'm now allowing my emotions to express themselves as they are and how they want to instead of keeping them inside.

my first therapist (psyd trained in the early 90s) said that the one requirement for his program that people HATED was a requirement that students attend therapy for themselves for x # of hours. but he thought it was essential to be an effective therapist, even if they had no obvious trauma.

I always tell my clients to 1). Let it out, 2). Allow for silence. People get weird when it’s silent but sometimes people don’t want to talk to when they are experiencing their pain 3). Just continue to validate and ask if they want to continue the session. Some people need to process what they have gone through and then talk about it.

Am I the only severely traumatized person who rarely wants someone to just hear me, or sit with me rather? If I’m even talking about something that important, it’s because I can’t figure it out, and I need your help to fix it, asap.

As a therapist in training, I was very disappointed with a related experience in class recently. I broke down crying while in a sharing circle and the discomfort with that in the room was palpable. No one spoke to me or offered any comfort after. I now worry about all of them with future clients as a result.

I was seeking that very thing, very upfront and direct about it. I only found it in massage therapy. without talking about the trauma

Instant reframing with little acknowledgment is so invalidating. Do I even have a right to feel that emotion?

Wow. Thank you so much for your content on this issue. I've been struggling with why therapy hasn't worked with several therapists actually. I feel like I have to fix myself first before I go to therapy for it to work, and I dont know how to do that.

My least favorite approach is intensive “TFP” for “difficult cases” (aka BPD). TFP = Transference Focused Psychotherapy…The flat affect, disgust and annihilation counter-transference presentations can be seriously retraumatizing. When a therapist hasn’t done enough of their own emotional work they can deeply harm the person they believe they are trying “help”. TFP can quickly become about shaming. It’s not about holding space for a person’s grief and deep pain (connected to gaslighting, double binds and violating). It’s about being a wounded therapist working with “an interesting case”.

I found therapy to be detrimental in some ways. Like, I’m somehow not allowed to move emotion. It’s about moving forward, which is valid, but it’s ok to sit in it for a bit
