the worst thing about ai right now is senior management thinking its a magic one shot everything in a prompt machine

It does matter . You can’t verify the output of an AI if you’re not an expert of said field . It’s the juniors that are worse off, because senior people are the ones that are 10x more productive

I don't necessarily agree with 1 thing. If a bad software engineer uses AI, they don't have the judgement to review that code and make sure it's actually good. This leads to bugs or the code rewritten over and over. Being good at the craft is still important for now

I think the most annoying thing so far is non tech people showing up to design reviews and engineering discussions with prototypes and saying things like “well Claude said we should do this”.

Someone who didn't know what they were doing without AI only becomes someone who can do something they shouldn't be doing with AI. Companies are selling this dream of a decimated career field to justify layoffs in an uncertain financial future. Also, if you know what you are asking for, generating code with AI is not difficult. Knowing WHAT to ask for is a senior skill, is difficult, and thus this hasn't threatened senior engineers, but introductory ones, if anything.

30 year, full stack, six-figure, software engineer/architect, technical consultant in ERP. AI in the hands of a good engineer is a force multiplyer to the extreme. What took a team and years is taking me months now as a solo. Embrace it, we don't write in assembly anymore either.

Idk at least from my perspective if you don’t understand fundamentals you still have really bad taste and don’t understand how to guide outputs or edit what you do get. So many non designers make slop that doesn’t work bc they don’t understand fundamentals

Nah. Veteran systems engineer here. You just have to adapt and augment your experience with AI. That puts you above any noob using AI.

"it's incredibly exciting for someone who wasn't..." So now we'll be down to a bunch of mediocre personality hires and a tiny percentage of folks who actually know how to fix things instead of the inverse

The most crazy time is for the few that have less then 10 years till retirement… imagine beeing a staff software engin 5 years before retirement…. The motivation to learn sth new is just… zero - you worked hard to be where u are and you were half way out all ready 😅 but yeah… for us mid career… i have a lot of convos like: my job used to be fun, now i just tell AI what to do…

AI amplifies what you do. If you're a bad software engineer, you be a horrible one with AI as you will mess up the codebase 10x as fast. If you weren't able to see what sh*t you made before, you'll still not see it now AI writes it for you, only difference you push out 10x the amount only garbage as before

I think you have it backwards. It’s never been more important to be good at developing.
