Sushruta, the “father of surgery,” invented nose jobs over 2,600 years ago in India. Now, the West is finally recognizing his vast contributions to medicine. On June 19, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Scotland unveiled a bronze bust dedicated to Sushruta, the Indian physician known as the “father of surgery.” Dr. Chandra Cheruvu, a gastrointestinal surgeon, donated the 200-pound sculpture by a Tamil Nadu artist, TOI reported. “The ceremony celebrated India’s ancient medical heritage,” India’s Consulate General in Scotland wrote. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh was founded in 1505. But Sushruta was operating millennia before the college ever opened, around 600 B.C. in Varanasi. Sushruta wrote the ‘Sushruta Samhita,’ which an inscription on the bust describes as “the earliest known surgical treatise,” detailing 1,120 diseases, 700 medicinal plants, over 300 operations, and 125 surgical instruments he made from natural materials. He classified surgery into eight categories, including incision, excision, drainage, and suturing. “The Sushruta Samhita also laid down one of the world’s first medical codes of ethical practice, predating Hippocrates,” the bust’s plaque explains. Sushruta even included instructions for the first-ever recorded nose job, or nasal reconstruction surgery. Some think Sushruta developed the procedure in response to the then-common practice of mutilating noses as punishment. The nose was considered an appendage of “respect and reputation,” author T.M. Shah wrote. “The fact that such a man in flesh and blood performed these surgeries a millennium before Hippocrates and two millenniums before European stalwarts like Celsius and Galen ever appeared on the scene is hard for most to realize and appreciate,” Surajit Bhattacharya wrote in a paper.
