That spacesuit was tossed into space on February 3, 2006, as part of a unique, low-cost science and education project called SuitSat-1 (also known as RadioSkaf). Instead of just throwing away a retired Russian Orlan spacesuit that the International Space Station crew no longer needed, engineers and ham radio enthusiasts decided to turn it into a makeshift satellite. Here is what they did with it: * The Setup: They stuffed the empty suit with old, unwashed clothes to give it a human shape, and mounted a battery pack and a radio transmitter inside the helmet. * The Mission: The suit was configured to continuously broadcast pre-recorded voice messages from students and scientists from around the world in multiple languages, alongside telemetry data and a special signal. * The Goal: Amateur radio operators and students on Earth using simple police scanners or ham radio gear could tune in to the frequency (145.990 MHz) and track the "ghostly" floating spacesuit as it passed overhead. Affectionately nicknamed "Ivan Ivanovich" or "Mr. Smith" by the crew, the suit transmitted thousands of messages over a couple of weeks before its batteries finally gave out. It remained in orbit as space debris until September 7, 2006, when it safely burned up upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere.
