@/immigration officers 🙄, not only speaking in informal to me, but critising me and laughing in front of my face for having a document wrong. Their faces dropped when I spoke to the back in Korean. They went silent. Suddenly they used the most polite korean Ihave ever heard in my life

Had this question forever. What if you can't tell someone's age? (Would be an issue for me) I assume you just use formal until someone tells you not to?

As a Brit this is interesting. Unless it’s a professional setting we don’t tend to be formal unless we absolutely hate you.

as a German I’m already used to formal vs informal speech and even there it can tell you something about how a person sees you..although I’d say it’s less serious in germany. But tbh when I first came to Korea I didn’t really pay attention (mainly because I couldn’t speak Korean )until i asked a friend what the biggest redflag when meeting someone new here is and she told me to watch out for people who immediately speak 반말 . And now it genuinely makes my blood boil, whenever this happens . So I always straight up ask them 근데 혹시 저한테 왜 반말하세요? 💀and most people apologize and switch to 존댓말. But I’ve also had men get straight up racist after being called out…one even called me the n-word. So yeah… you can really tell a LOT about someone by how they react when you call it out

I could say there might be a different way of thinking about. Especially with social media. Learning formal and informal is hard enough with any foreign language. As someone who learned Spanish, then German. Korean is still very difficult. It is possible that there is an assumption that informal is easier for foreign people to commit to memory so it is easier to communicate in that style??

From the Western perspective it doesn’t seem offensive. But, I wonder what the intent is. I could imagine several intents that seem kind and welcoming and several that are dismissive to foreigners. Is it possible to tell?

I could see in some cases i can see it’s them thinking they’re being helpful bc say English isn’t as explicit in what is formal vs informal but most of us learn 존댓말 so unironically that’s easier. The only time I have to remind myself to add 요 is when I give short one word responses like 진짜!? … 요 😅

Yeah it has always thrown me off especially if we are talking in KOREAN. Like sure there is no formal speech in English but like… we’re not speaking English so it still feels disrespectful.

we do this in Nigeria too,some tribe doesn't have formal way of talking to each other,so even though my tribe does some of us talk to them informally 😂

sadly its telling. I had a Korean doctor talk to my Korean mom in that sort of way since our first visit and it made me so mad. didn't bother to greet me (probably because he thought I didn't speak korean). mom said its bc his korean isn't that good and the dialect region is like that (doubtful, my mom is just too nice). we only went twice and never went to him again (found a better specialist to help my mom).

As a Korean speaking foreigner it also gives me an ick especially that I always use 존댓말 when meeting someone first time, or even later when if they are older and don’t offer to switch to 반말
