A very common canadian employment law question that stumps many candidates: This question has ended more job searches than any failed interview. "Why did you leave your last job?" Hiring managers are not curious about your old job. They are screening for risk. Every answer you give is being filtered through one question: is this person going to be a problem? ❌ "The culture was toxic." Flags you as someone who creates conflict even if you never did. ❌ "I was overlooked for a promotion I deserved." Sounds entitled and bitter before you even start. ❌ "I was let go but it was completely unfair." You just made yourself the candidate they call HR about before making an offer. ❌ "I needed to prioritize my mental health." Brave in real life. Career limiting in an interview room. ✅ "I got to a point where I had contributed everything I could and I wanted a new challenge." ✅ "I made a deliberate decision to find an environment that matched where I want to go in the next five years." ✅ "I left on good terms. I just knew it was time to find something that pushed me further." Short. Confident. No apology. Not explaining a past. Selling a future. And if the real reason you left was harassment, retaliation, or a situation your employer created and hoped you would absorb, you may have a legal claim worth more than you think. As a canadian employment lawyer, this is all too common. Save this before your next interview. #legaladvice #EmploymentLawyer #EmploymentLaw #jobinterview #careeradvice @Achkar Law
