People confuse ‘introversion’ with social anxiety. A lot of the people in your comments struggle with social anxiety disorder and would benefit from actual therapy to recover from it. It’s not a skill issue but overcoming deliberating anxiety. Social anxiety can be so bad, you can literally feel paralysed

Being social drains us. We're exhausted. Introverts are social but it exhausts us.

People conflate anxiety/lack of social skill with introversion. Introverts find in-person interaction to be generally draining, and the opposite is true for extroverts. Of course, the extent to which it is draining is dependent upon social skill. This is why so many introverts choose to partake in low effort/skill online communication over more challenging situations.

as an introvert, I think introverts often expect the part where you actually make friends to "just happen". a lot of advice TO introverts is to get out and do stuff. like, get out and join a sport. go to a climbing gym. whatever.
the thing is, that doesn't actually make you friends it merely puts you in a position where you could meet people who might become a friend. without further action you are basically at the mercy of someone deciding to adopt you as a friend on their own.
as an introvert this is the thing I find most exhausting and difficult about friend-making - the part where you have to like be open to having boring, shitty social experiences with people you might not end up liking because thats how you meet people you do like in a way that actually builds friendships.
so the failure point is that the commenter went to dance class for four years and either expected people to magically adopt them, or never moved on to a different social group when that one failed to pan out.

It’s just an energy management problem for me. Social interaction is tiring, and I need to do a lot of it for work, so I have a very limited amount of it to spend on personal relationships. Putting in the up front investment to develop NEW relationships with that very limited energy pool is hard to make myself do.

Introverted and shy are not the same. Neither are introverted and poor social skills.

I’m frustrated with people misusing the term introversion. People EXHAUST me but I’m charming, personable, and meet/entertain people easily. Introversion is NOT shyness or social anxiety. It just means we recharge alone where extroverts recharge by peopling. 🤦🏿♀️sorry, that’s my pet peeve and I know it’s not the point.

idk when it happened but everyone has the wrong idea of introvert and extrovert. people conflate them with anxious/shy and social/charismatic when its in fact about energy. someone can be shy and extroverted and someone else can be confident and introverted. on top of that most people are ambiverts because we are humans. you can be more introverted or extroverted but its incredibly unlikely you are entirely one or the other. this is one of those definitions on the Internet which really ticks me off because so many people incorrectly use the words while be so confident in the meaning

As someone who's going through this right now, its EXTREME social anxiety that feels so real and permanent that it must just be part of your personality, hence "introversion". Also (for me at least) there's a sense of hopelessness and despair that social skills will NEVER work for you, reinforcing the whole "immutable personality trait" way of thinking

From someone who used to be call themselves an introvert, people suck. As in, finding people who simply have the right morals that make me able to be friends with them a possibility without betraying myself is very hard. It takes practice and a lot of it, go get socially competent, hard to get that when you don't know 3 people you can actually stand without being revolted by their morals.

for me, I'm exhausted. it's tiring talking to people, and I get home from work (where I'm talking to people all day), and the spoons it takes to go out is just more than I feel worth it if I'm going to go somewhere and just sit in a corner because I don't have the energy to go up and come up with the words. I do not think on my feet well much at all (working on that a lil), but it's mostly just the draw to rot in bed instead of getting out the door, and the getting up and going to talk to someone, there's a huge hurdle of fear that I just haven't broken through

I was painfully, debilitatingly introverted until two things happened my sophomore year. 1) a very kind older boy I was on the cross country team with ran with me one day, and at the end of it he said "You know, it's okay for you to talk to people. like, people will enjoy it if you talk to them." it genuinely blew my mind. and 2) I got sick of coaches and teachers always describing me as quiet. I started forcing myself to interact with people even though it terrified me. I'm 33 now and while I still have anxiety, Im also confident in the knowledge that I can competently interact with people

Having people around is fine. Having to interact with people and engage with them constantly is draining as fuck. It’s really hard work and any enjoyment that might, or might not, come out of it is simply not enough to justify the social battery drainage

I'm introverted. Introversion just means I don't gain energy from socializing, I lose it instead. This doesn't stop me from socializing at all, it just means I have a timer before I need a break. I'm not sure what this commenter is talking about. It sounds like a different issue.

Introversion does not equal social anxiety. They go hand in hand, sure. But it’s my social anxiety that tells me I’ve been too much in a social situation and “don’t be weird” and “leave before this gets awkward.” It’s my introversion that makes me physically exhausted to talk to people after being around others for too long. To prefer home over the bar.

I think you answered it. I am an introvert and it is hard and scary and uncomfortable to make friends but I think the people who don’t make friends think that that hard scary uncomfortable feeling will magically go away or someone will override it for them by coming to force them to make friends.

okay, y'know how some people have higher libidos than other people? and so if you've got a high libido you're willing to jump through a lot more hoops to get laid than someone who is less interested?
Now apply that to social interaction. Introverted people do not crave social interactions and crowds the same way extroverts do. So if an introvert and an extrovert both have the same sort of difficulties talking to people (social anxiety, shyness, physical disability...) an extrovert will probably think it's worth it to push through those more than an introvert would.

I'm mulling my mind over this because the comment does come from a real place, where certain advice works better for extroverts than introverts. But this commenter uses it to justify ego-driven learned helplessness.
Someone doesn't start out with "you don't understand" unless they are too secure with their negative position/self-image to genuinely absorb advice from others without catering to their world view.

I feel like sometimes it has to do with insecurity rather than being an introvert. It’s takes a certain level of confidence to make new friends. I struggle with talking to people in new environments bc I’m insecure of what they’ll think of me, but once I start getting to know them more I’m able to feel a little more comfortable to start engaging with them beyond surface level small talk that leads to friendship.

Theyre posting a skill issue on a chanel that teaches the skill in question.... Like if someone went and posted on Duolingo's tic toc "Ive lived in spain for 4 years and still cant order a coffee in spanish. You dont understand how hard it is!". Except the owl would probably be way less nice to them about it.
