One of my favorite techniques for hip and low back pain — the gluteus medius release in side-lying. I abduct the femur to shorten the muscle, set my tension just off the greater trochanter working superior toward the iliac crest, then lengthen the tissue by either straightening the leg or using abduction and adduction to create a dynamic stretch. Controlling the limb the entire time gives you precision you just can't get any other way.
