@memoria.paganorum: Always seek knowledge for yourself. And always double-check what you’re told. How did ancient pagan symbols become associated with racism and the far right? The answer has far more to do with modern nationalism than with the original religions behind these symbols. From the appropriation of Germanic imagery in the 19th and 20th centuries to modern Odinist, Wotanist and folkish extremist movements, some pagan symbols acquired political associations they never originally carried. Mjölnir, runes and other ancient symbols are still used today by countless pagans with no connection to racist or extremist ideology. Context matters, and appropriation does not erase history. pagan symbols, paganism and far right, racism and paganism, Norse paganism, Odinism, Wotanism, folkish paganism, Mjölnir meaning, Norse runes, Germanic paganism, pagan history, modern paganism, extremist symbolism, pagan community, historical paganism #paganism #paganhistory #norsepaganism #pagancommunity #heathenry

They absolutely can be used like that. It is wise to be cautious. Don't get upset or defensive if people get uneasy with your symbols... it's a sign they're good people.

Some of them have been successfully co-opted by racists, and it would be a valid assumption that if you use those symbols...you are also racist.

No,not unless someone uses it that way. A prime example is the sw@stik@ which originally was a Hindu peace symbol

There have been many well meant and good symbols throughout history - across all beliefs and cultures - stolen and distorted into something bad. For example the swastika derived from Sanskrit svastika, it was weaponised and is now globally viewed as a racist symbol, but that was never its origin.. it’s unfortunate, much like pagan symbols - it’s easy to understand why some symbols are viewed as racist in the modern day despite their origin, but it doesn’t make it any less sad that they’ve been twisted!

I find it fascinating that there are some native American symbols that are also found in viking culture. religion is a man made construct designed to control, or vilifie a segment of humans or gender. I am of the earth the universe aware that there are entities far more wiser and older then myself and grounded in mother earth among the elements.
