As an archaeologist, please, if you find something, report it to the authorities. Once an artefact is removed from its archaeological context, we lose valuable information about it, as well as about the site and the other materials that may be associated with it. This is why metal detecting without the proper licence or archaeological supervision can seriously damage our archaeological heritage. I know it’s exciting to find and own historic coins and artefacts, but their value goes far beyond simply having a cool object to keep. Please, let’s leave the recovery and recording of archaeological material to professionals.

As an archaeologist as well man you just gotta keep that coin and sell it for a bunch of money or keep it so the value rises make sure not to tell authorities they’ll find sort of way to claim it as theirs and you get nothing.

My dad and I found this Buffalo nickel (Indian Head nickel) together in a cemetery that closed in the 1920s. Buffalo nickels were minted by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938, and this one is so worn that I’m not even sure what year it was made. It may not be 500 years old, but to me, it’s priceless. After my dad passed away, I had the nickel set in gold, and now I wear it every single day. A little piece of a memory with my dad that I’ll always carry with me. ❤️🦬

I want to post this comment to clarify the rules and stipulations around metal detecting since many comments have brought up reporting finds like these or instead just finding things of interest and not informing proper authorities. In the UK, rules around reporting finds are as follows: any coins of precious metal and over the age of 300, found together (classed as a hoard), two or more prehistoric objects found together, any object over 300 years in age that consists of precious metal and any objects found alongside any of the above. While I appreciate many people may believe every single find has to be reported, the local FLOs are swamped and if every detectorist submitted all of their finds (as in ones that don’t qualify under the treasure act) the portable antiquities scheme would grind to a halt. It is still very important and valuable to report FINDS OF INTEREST. However, a coin like the one in this video is fairly common, and hundreds are uncovered in the UK daily. I assure everyone these will be reported at some point just to get them registered, but this does not qualify as something that has to be reported. Despite this, I emplore every detectorist to submit finds they may think are of interest, aswell as report any sites they may think need reporting.
