@modamensch: i'm begging folks to please focus on deinfluencing people from developing restrictive EDs with more productive talking points that focus on health rather than beauty. focusing on how it makes you "ugly" centers attractiveness in a way that is ignorant to how many people develop EDs and the role misogynistic oppression and SA often plays. #feminism #feminist #deinfluencer #arianagrande #undereating undereating, ariana grande, celebrity culture, feminism, social commentary
Any time I see someone tell people to not have an ed it’s cause “men don’t like that” “you’ll lose your period” “you don’t look good” it’s so stupid

I went the opposite. I got up to 500+ lbs. I wanted to feel safe. even at that weight I was still SAd. I have lost over 200lbs now. I still have issues with food.

literally there are so many horrible long lasting effects from EDs that aren't about beauty and desirability, it's so easy to talk about those instead of how you're not gonna be attractive anymore like wtf??? I'm years into recovery and still struggle with the long term effects and if I had known I was going to make the rest of my life more miserable than needed by starving and purging, I wouldn't have gone so extreme with it.

yeah also, people have that stereotypical idea of body dysmorphia where a thin/underweight person thinks they're super fat (all those photoshopped images of thin women looking in a mirror where they see a fat woman), but honestly for underweight women it often presents less as them thinking they are extremely fat and more like them just thinking they're not THAT thin, or that they're *almost* "thin enough". so for the underweight women with EDs where insecurity about looks is a big factor, it still isn't really effective because a lot of those women will never see themselves as thin as the examples people make about thinness being unattractive (not to mention the immense harm this does to fat & even "average weight" people with eating disorders)

THANK YOU! I work in a psych ward for teenagers with EDs and we see so many cases of girls who were SA'd and getting proper therapy for that is what actual is most effective in combating the ED.

I’m a trans man, and when I was twelve I went from having mild restrictive eating habits to a full blown eating disorder specifically because my mom tried to dissuade me by saying I wouldn’t go through puberty or get my period or grow breasts if I kept doing it. I really wish someone had told me about the serious health consequences that weren’t specifically about the idea of being a proper woman

I thought I was done with EDs when I started to notice how well I felt, how well I looked, when I ate enough. I was like "I may be fat according to the average human (it was a healthy weight but people still considered that I had a few kg to lose) but I am finally able to walk, to lift my bags (ex: to do the groceries), it's easier to dance and jump high..." I loved the freedom this new body gave me. Then I got in a toxic relationship and the chronic stress made me lose weight + I got on ADHD meds and antidepressants. I lost 15 kg. Every meal is a fight against myself. I hate having to fight against my brain. I want to eat but at the same time it feels disgusting. Now meals are a source of stress bc I have to plan them and cook them which takes energy, then I have to eat them which is even worse. So I avoid them, lose more weight, cry bc I can't do thr things I used to. Beauty standards and social pressure may have had a role when I first tried restricting my food intake, but what got me out of it is stop caring and reducing the amount of stress in my life. I hope the amount of stress I am in right now will reduce soon and I will be able to eat normally again. I miss the energy I had when I was """fat"""

My ED started because my trauma response was to fawn, and wanted to look as small and fragile as possible so that people would view me as something childlike and precious to protect :(

I think it also shows a disconnect for how "unattractive" eds tend to be. a lot of stuff is "gross" but that becomes irrelevant at some point

Thank you. This is really important for everyone to hear. Also: all bodies deserve care and love, even if they’re not attractive and/or healthy! A person deserves basic civility and respect at the very minimum whatever their body’s state might be!

Something that I think needs to be more widely spoken about is that it’s more common than people think for people to develop restrictive EDs, or have those EDs get severe, with a “goal” of becoming “ugly” or “repulsive.” A lot more people than you think want to look sick, unwell, unattractive. It’s a scary truth, but it’s very, very true.
