At least 359 people have been killed in the floods in Nepal amid fears of a second wave. More than 1,300 people remain missing – including 33 British nationals – as search and rescue operations continue. The catastrophic flash flooding, which hit China and Nepal on Wednesday, was triggered when a massive sheet of ice came loose from a Himalayan mountain. Based on satellite images, scientists assessed that this glacier collapse plummeted thousands of metres into a Nepali valley. The impact was so violent it generated seismic waves equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, triggering immediate landslides and a wall of water. Video captured by one of the construction workers shows the group abandoning a bridge crossing near a riverbank after spotting the flood rushing down on them near their worksite. As they fled to higher ground, one of the workers could be heard shouting, “Oh my God, oh my.” Another screamed, “Run, run!” to his colleagues as they scrambled up the hillside. Three days of heavy rain are expected, fueling fears of another round of disaster. The initial avalanche and subsequent landslides created new, unstable lakes by damming local rivers, significantly increasing the immediate risk of further mudslides, landslides, and flash floods. #5news #flooding #nepal
