Shame needs a much bigger look for me. The way I react to things that kill joy for my family, how I hate to be surprised by some contingency on a trip, how I react to the hotel room… I deserve to feel shame

I truly believe that, in the end, OCD is destined to become either a gift or a sentence, depending on which path someone finds and chooses. Most people wander between these extremes. But if you see what it can enable you to become, I believe it can truly be one of the greatest, yet most painful, gifts you can be given. It is that way because of how human beings and life itself work. I believe there is only one way to live in freedom and peace: to reach a point where what we cannot control affects our inner peace as little as possible, ideally not at all. We cannot control what happens to us, which thoughts arise, which sensations we experience, or which emotions we feel. This is true for everyone. With OCD, the negative side is experienced at extreme intensity. That is why radical acceptance has existed for millennia, clearly embodied in Buddhism. The idea is simple, but extremely difficult to achieve. Most people can avoid that discomfort or push it aside. With severe OCD, you often cannot. You don’t have that choice. The real way out is to accept everything. Really everything. If even the most horrific thoughts, images, sensations or impulses can exist without destroying your inner peace, that ability eventually extends to everything else in life. Our entire experience of life exists within consciousness, and OCD can teach you to accept whatever appears within it without being shaken by it. This is also why meaning matters so much. Many people know how to beat OCD, yet lack the enormous consistency required because they are tired of suffering for nothing. But if the suffering has meaning, and with OCD I believe it truly can without making anything up, it becomes something different. OCD gives you a universal human struggle at 100x intensity. If you can conquer that, you may have conquered human consciousness and existence at its core. That kind of stability can only be built under extreme pressure. OCD gives you that. It takes away your choice. Either you grow through it toward a state almost no one else will ever reach, or it breaks you. And the gift?It forces you to decide which one it becomes. And if you truly conquer it, then you are free, forever.
