horses are pregnant for 11m 11d usually(horse breeder here) therefore, the human half of the centaur would have more gestational development. making the human half closer to the 1yo mark. the baby should be able to support itself just fine. add some magic to it and they should come out pretty toddler like

the reason humans are born less developed is so that the head can fit through the birth canal. since horse birth canals are much bigger than human birth canals, I also think the human bit will be more developed

I think it’d probably be more like a roughly three to four month human baby on a slightly overdue horse’s body. More of a year plus a couple weeks. The milestone for supporting their head independently while upright is around four months so two more months for normal horse gestation plus another month and a half or two months seems like it should balance out to a centaur foal that can support its own head and prance around on its little legs but still seems like a baby and isn’t too large. (A centaur foal’s horse half is also probably smaller than a normal foal, for proportion. If we assume the horse half is going to mature at a similar speed to the human half and grow at a similar rate then it would follow that the foal is probably shorter and smaller at birth but fully developed.)

human baby being more develop makes sense bc the reason human babies are less developed is bc an older baby's head could not pass through during birth, but you wouldn't have that problem with a centaur giving birth.

the human baby will have longer to gestate since the horse has more space so for sure baby pops out older

realistically, i don't think we have to be THAT realistic since yk, centaurs shouldn's even exist in the first place, so we might as well pretend that even tho horses develop knees later, they might as well develop at the rate of a human baby just for the sake of it (or not, whatever works for your versions of centaurs lol)

the artist was thinking about the same problem

So the reason we’re born so early is due to head and birth canal size. Big brain little hole. But horse birthing canals are a lot larger and their human half looks fairly human sized so big brain bigger hole? So I think they’d come out like young toddlers just before the weaning stage as they can cook for longer

centaur babies are more developed on human side, little less developed horse side. so the human bit has just enough to like stay upright, but the horse bit has just about no energy. it then definitely spends the first month just eating and sleeping. probably like a year long gestation.

So horses frequently carry past the 11 month mark 12 months is normal 2 extra months is not over overdeveloping any equine fetus AND mom controls the size of baby in utero once its out that up to genetics but it would be super feasible for centaurs to cook their babies a little longer for the human baby to be full developed without any complications from the horse half 🤔

In my fantasy story, centaur pregnancies last two years, and the human part starts developing first, so when it comes out it’s a 1 year old human body attached to a newborn horse body. They’re quicker to learn new skills than human babies, but physically they grow slower in their first couple of years, so by their third year they’ve evened out with similar-aged human children, and then after that they grow at the same rate.

Horse pregnancy is 3 months longer then human. So the more developed human part seems more logical maybe accelerate the human development by like two months?
