In my opinion, both are correct if well used. And both talk about an actions with a time stamp. "a while" means the article 'a + noun' and can be used to talk about 'some time' usually goes after the prepositions 'for', 'in', 'after'. While 'awhile' one word, is an adverb modifying the verbs before it and the verbs can be: stay, rest, wait, etc and it's also used for 'for some time'.
