Putin received Trump's envoys with courtesy but made it clear that Russia will not negotiate under pressure. "We are in control and we decide what to do for ourselves, not you," was the message conveyed by the Russian president. The US delegation, which arrived with a peace proposal, left Moscow without public commitments. Trump had said he had "an idea for peace," but the reality is that Putin is unwilling to cede an inch of what he has already gained on the battlefield. Russia's conditions are non-negotiable: recognition of occupied territories in Donbas, withdrawal of NATO troops from Ukraine, and release of frozen assets. Putin has already ruled out returning any occupied territory as part of a peace agreement and maintains his goal of total control over Donetsk. Moscow does not accept a broad ceasefire; only a limited three-day pause in attacks on Kiev to allow negotiations.
