I say that when I’ve done nothing wrong but I am genuinely sorry you feel that way. It’s not gaslighting, it’s having emotional boundaries.

Wow, this comment section. 👁️👄👁️Nothing brings out defensiveness faster than the words “take accountability.” 😂

So where does the person take responsibility for their own feelings?

I think we are making an overgeneralization by assuming that if someone feels hurt by another person’s words or actions, then the other person must have intended to cause harm or must have done something wrong. That is not necessarily true.
People are responsible for their own feelings and reactions. Every individual should examine why they feel that way and decide how to respond. Feeling offended does not automatically mean that something objectively offensive was said.
This is especially important when people disagree. Having a different opinion is not the same as attacking or harming someone. Expecting another person to apologize for sincerely expressing an opinion simply because it caused discomfort can become a form of emotional manipulation. We can ask people to communicate respectfully, but we cannot make them responsible for managing our emotions or require them to change their beliefs so that we feel better.

When I apologized for the way “someone feels”, I am usually trying appease an irrational person’s demand to control my behavior and I know I am not in the wrong.

I left a friendship over this. It’s a form of gaslighting.
wrong answer! that response assumes its one sided. I will not apologise for warped perception of others. The words "im sorry you feel that way" is saying back in a polite way
"I don't agree with your perception and thoughts about me or a situation you think is occurring".

We were taught to say this line in a call centre for one of the biggest telco’s in Australia. It’s dismissive and gas lighting like reflecting the issue straight back onto the other person.

But…what if what you said was truth and you said it as kind as you could. You can be sorry that someone gets hurt and not be apologetic for speaking the truth.

I don’t like to apologize for my actions if my actions were something that I don’t feel sorry for. I do like to apologize that I made somebody feel bad with my actions or my words cause it’s not usually my intent to hurt somebody. But we are all different so some of the time my actions may hurt somebody else and that’s just something that they will have to accept.
