Eight months after Exxon's CEO called Venezuela "uninvestable," the U.S. government took the position itself: a 35% stake in a private company with century-long rights to 17 oil fields. 1/5 of Venezuela's reserves. The partner is Alejandro Betancourt, who has faced criminal money-laundering investigations in Spain and Switzerland, per WSJ. No formal charges have emerged. He's close to Delcy Rodríguez — Maduro's deputy, who nobody elected and has no legal authority to sign this deal. Plus, Article 12 of the Venezuelan Constitution says this oil CANNOT be sold. I'm Venezuelan-American. I talk to people there every day. Most are shocked. And the same people responsible for their misery just got a business partner in Washington.
