Understanding the wants of someone who may not be able to communicate in any form creates a senseless projection of their wants by their caretakers, which gives illusion to the ethical issue. Though these people may not be able to communicate, the problem lies in if they have real consciousness, it doesn’t make their right to live any less, however is their choice really theirs if they can’t think in any sense? Does this mean we should just kill people with such difficulties? Would you pull the lever on their lives and take the chance of their choice in existing and hope there’s something else afterwards? To assume the wants of these people with these difficulties makes you the same as the caretakers in question. Those who can’t think don’t want, but those who can, how could we tell what they would want?

i had a classmate like the boy in the post, in elementary school. She didn’t get to my age , just 18, she died at 14. She wasn’t happy. She spoke by pressing buttons on the computer. It was genuinely horrifying to see how much she was suffering. Her parents were selfish, even I as a 7 year old understood how much my classmate didn’t wanna be here in these conditions.
