The wish is not that complicated, Ian's wish is that simple. The willow is that straightforward.

one thing i really dislike is when people try to pretend like bear making that wish on a whim is proof that he’s a bad person when a lot of people probably would’ve made a wish like that, not because they hate the person but because they’re just desperate for that person to be loved. the wish itself is not malicious instead its what bear does with the wish that makes him malicious

I think Bear becomes sinister far earlier than that. Unless I remember it badly, she displays signs of being mentally ill earlier than the restaurant. Signs he ignores because her clinginess pleases him.
Later I think he becomes irredeemably awful the moment he now accepts that a magical force has hijacked Nikki's mind or body, because then he is a knowing and willful rapist. I feel like that point is only half way in.

You’re one of the few people to note that his flaws up until his turn to villain are just regular person flaws. That’s what bothered me, there was no foreshadowing or hinting really, he just became a villain because the movie requires it as a twist. It comes out of nowhere.

Very cool and realistic take. I was getting tired of the “Bear knew all along” type of responses. He clearly didn’t and then was convincing himself that it couldn’t be the wish(perfectly rational response). He’s still terrible, and I like to think the wish went wrong because he made an evil wish.

Also, a moment I don't see mentioned often is Nikki saying in the car that she can't write a love story because she hasn't experienced love.
So I think another part of this could be that wish-Nikki similarly does not know how to write the script for her character "Nikki who is in love with Bear," but she is compelled by the wish to do so anyway. And given her obsession with Bear, he is the model she looks to for how to act.
Of course, Bear pretty consistently does not treat his loved ones very well. Just look at how he neglected the wellbeing of his cat or how much suffering he allows Nikki to go through just to get what he wants out of her.
So by mirroring him, Nikki similarly stops caring about treating Bear and others well and instead focuses entirely on how to get out of him the attention and validation the wish forces her to desire more than anything else in the world

It’s actually pretty true to magic. You have to be very intentional, very direct, very on the nose. You don’t want to leave room for magical interpretations. You have to put in a clause that you want this wish at the harm of no one or nothing. It’s also pretty well known that love spells do work, but never the way you want them to. Most of us know to not work with love spells, or obsession spells . A love spell is I’ll almost always backfire in some way

the line where she says 'my cat' when referring to bears cat definitely makes me think she is definitely a reflection of his wants

Love, hugely love you content. But I'm on a personal quest. I'm full focused on not living this world before people start using hypothesis when they mean hypothesis instead of theory. Haven't seen the movie, BTW. Best.

I've been thinking about this movie and the idolization of Nikki that bear had and it made me think. Does the wish try and create the version of Nikki that bear has in his head and it's malformed due to his idolization of her being so shallow. The version of Nikki in bears mind doesn't have any defining personality traits and so all of it is just the wish grasping for a personality that doesn't exist. I've made the mistake of idolizing people before and this movie felt like a letter to me saying "stop that", luckily I dont share many more traits than that. 10/10 movie.

Towards the end of the film when Bear tries to make a second wish but finds he can’t break the wood, he STILL isn’t willing to fully take responsibility and just undo the wish. The wish he tries to make so late into the film, even after everything, is “I wish Nikki loved me still as a friend.” He’s still trying to rob her of autonomy even after Sara is dead and the movie is almost over

i think if u view the movie through the lens of a metaphor for the dangers of ai then the oww making an approximation of nikki that fits bears selfish ideals, as opposed to actually making it so the real nikki loves him, makes a lot of sense

I the willow is completely literal, we see evidence to that with how it grants the other wish we see. The problem with Bears wish stems from the fact that he has no idea who Nikki actually is, and doesn't care to. So the willow can't grant his wish by making the real Nikki love Bear, because Bear only loves the idea of Nikki he's created for himself. So in order to fulfill the wish, the willow has to create a new Nikki.

I absolutely loooooove this take!!!! It’s unique, and tho not uncommon in some aspects, it really solidifies how the willow is a reflection, it’s about the energy put into it! For me personally, I think manipulating autonomy is a flawed wish that would malfunction bc it is morally unnatural. The willow has to conjure a whole other being since og Nikki never actually had those feelings. Another layer is how Nikki has the Eye of Ra on her arms, that might impact it too.

it makes perfect sense to me that it backfired on bear, why should he be able to wish for something that completely strips someone else's autonomy?

Yes!!!! I saw someone criticizing the trope of the “cr*zy girlfriend” that we always see with the “wish gone wrong” in the media for obvious s*x*st reasons (like the Buffy episode where every girl except Cordelia is obsessed with Xander when he wants Cordelia back), BUT I was willing to make an exception for this movie because I also think it’s HIS version of love (which as you said isn’t love) being projected back at him.

Losing Traction :
I think it shows why most rules on wishes include “ can’t affect free will” but I also think the wish manifested bears consciousness into wish Nikki which is why when it first takes hold she says “ I did just lose my cat “. Even though it was bear that lost his cat , and then she makes up the story about the dying dad (bears grandma just died , and even the “no no no “ at the restaurant is almost a direct reflection of how bear reacted to finding his cat dead . Would also explain why she is constantly apologizing and trying to figure out how to keep his “love “ . She basically became the Nikki version of bear . Of course the wish obviously warped it and turned the dial all the way up on crazy but essentially it’s his personality that took over her .
