you act as if it's so hard to diagnose bad bearings literally all Toyota needs to do eight bolts sump off release a main cap and then you've got access to the bearing to see if it's okay or not

this isn't an odd technique to diagnose the issue. frequency analysis is used throught a lot of engine design. They're essentially measuring the resonant frequency of the crankshaft. I'm just making up numbers here but basically a normal crankshaft will always resonate at 15Hz. If the main bearings are worn due to the debris in the engine issue this will open the tolerance on the bearing thus making the crankshaft loose. this will cause the resonant frequency to decrease. so when measured the frequency can drop to 13Hz. This isn't a normal hammer they are using. it's a hammer with its own accelerometer on it that measures the force of the impact you are striking with. Based on the striking force and the "ringing" response from the crankshaft measured by the accelerometer attached to the crankshaft you can measure the resonant frequency. This is widely used in industry since it allows you to prevent specific machinery from shaking at its resonant frequency. Machinery that does shake at its resonant frequency will usually cause the machinery to shake itself apart. I have some experience in this since it's essentially my job to measure vibrations on rotating machinery in industry.

we have these accelerometers all over aircraft. there must be like 200 of them on a Blackhawk. they're so incredibly sensitive that they can tell you things are going bad hundreds of hours before there's any signs
