counter point, it isn't always appropriate in English, either. when a teacher says "I need you to listen to me" and a student replies "I can hear you", the teacher justifiable replies "that is not what I said, and not what you need to reply" or similar. Beyond that, often, (but not always) in English we say "I heard you", even if the event is occuring more or less in the now.
