Our farm is paid off but we drop 30-40k a year in machinery maintenance. It’s very hard to turn a profit when raising cattle or farming, that’s why a lot of us have off farm jobs. We currently don’t even pay ourselves min wage because we put so much money back into the farm. Farmers farm because we like it and we enjoy feeding people. It’s a lifestyle not a job. We all just have to keep on keeping on. 👍

The problem with the new generation of farmers and ranchers is they don’t want to work hard for it. They take out extreme loans for all types of machinery that do the hard work. They just aren’t disciplined like their predecessors. That’s why agriculture is so expensive now, and a major cause of inflation. They think they are entitled to destroy this country with laziness and still earn top dollar. SAD!

And zeroing out your personal tax liability! You raising calves and operating is also paying for your farm. While not making money very much in 20 years of hard work you have a big farm paid for and some good raising and work ethic for the little ones. So breaking even and putting work in is almost what every farmer has done in the last 250 years.

NE Nebraska farmer here who started with nothing, 55 and still working off the farm, have $389,000 in farm debt but now have $7.5 million in assets. Retiring from full time job soon and farm full time at age 57. Keep grinding.

man the comments I've been seeing on farm stuff lately have been crazy. I have a paid off farm, but its not very big, when I was paying off that loan, I worked two jobs and on the farm. now I just work one and farm. It's crazy how much people think im rolling in the cash. I could sell the place and I would be, but it took me 15 YEARS to get to this point
