my therapist described it like being in a healthy relationship after being in a DV situation you will always be waiting for the other shoe to drop you'll be waiting for that little moment where they blow up on you where they hit you and you might even become aggressive because you're expecting these responses, but you're not getting them and your brain gets confused and might cause you to leave or self sabotage the relationship until they leave.
