![The Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) are two countries located in the peninsular region of Korea in Northeast Asia. Divided in 1945 by the 38th parallel of latitude chosen by the USA and the USSR (by US military planners specifically in July of 1945 at the Potsdam Conference) as a border for their separated military occupation of the Korean peninsula, North Korea is situated in the north of the peninsula and South Korea is situated in the south of the peninsula. On June 25th, 1950, the Northern Korean People's Army |nvaded South Korea at multiple strategic points along the 38th parallel, beginning the Korean War, one of the major proxy wars of the Cold War. This war lasted until July 27th, 1953, when the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed bringing a cessation to the hostilities of the Korean War. Under the provisions of that agreement, the Korean Demilitarized Zone was established. Over their history, the 38th parallel has not seen much movement, yet stands now as the Military Demarcation Line as the result of the developed |de()l()gical differences between the two countries. Under Japanese ()ccupat|on (1910-1945) it was known as Chōsen, and prior to that it was the Empire of Korea (Daehan Jeguk, 1897-1910). Korea has strong influences from China and Japan, such as the influence of Confucianism in Korean traditions.
