as someone with major depression, let me throw some light on why people look like this when they're so low. It's because if we're honest about how we're feeling, we're isolated. I can't tell you the number of people around me who roll their eyes and distance themselves from me if I'm outwardly sad. No one wants to be around the mood killer. So we have to smile and laugh and shut up about anything negative in our life or else we're treated as attention seeking and annoying.

When the prosecution brought up Lindsay putting on a brave face and “faking” being ok that about sent me to the edge. What woman HASN’T woken up and had to fake being sunshine and rainbows to take care of her family and get things done. That’s not a red flag that’s everyday life for a majority of the population.

I’m an attorney and was asked to attend a client luncheon by a partner because I have such a great personality in the weeks before I was preparing to take medical leave for depression and suicidal ideation. High functioning and masking depression is so incredibly normal in this world of stigma associated with mental health issues.

People without depression will never understand how easier it is to fake looking happy. How good we get at it so we don’t have to deal with the questions, or worse, the frustration of people around us. But worst of all, they will never understand that we do feel genuine happiness in these moments, but they just aren’t enough to carry us through the dark sometimes
