Tipping culture is mostly unique to the US because restaurant owners don't pay their workers a full wage. It baffles me as an outsider. Their reasoning is that it will increase food prices. However, paying customers not only have to pay for the food, tax, and tips—which already jacks up the price—but they also have to care for the welfare of the server. Tips should only be given for exceptional service, not be expected as part of the bill.

What drives me nuts is when they say “a tip free environment” but then there’s a 16% or 18% surcharge …you’re like well then that’s the tip? Servers need to be paid a regular wage that’s it end of story. What kind of other job could survive without paying their workers a fair wage…none.

People fail to understand that banning tipping would increase food prices more than 20%. And before you say servers wouldn’t be paid as much you’re correct, but restaurants are going to absolutely use banning tips as a way to increase profits, that’s simply how businesses work
