Its only accurate if it correctly references that British food imports to Ireland increased during the famine, and that the claim that food was exported at higher rates is false, as is the claim of Queen Victoria refusing donations. Also it wouldnt be complete without mentioning that the famine was part of the larger 1850 Great Western Potato Blight that affected all of western Europe. Hundreds of thousands died in France and the same amount of people died in England and Wales as did in Ireland. But let me guess the book doesnt mention any of that because its more concerned with the Irish victim story than any actual facts.

i’m not denying that it wasn’t a famine but that doesn’t mean that books that use outdated language are inaccurate; they might call it a famine but they often describe the actual conditions that created food scarcity and starvation (aka british rule). reducing history to one word as the decider of “accuracy” is pretty limiting.

I only recently learned we don’t say Great Hunger / An Grota Mor and was genuinely curious what is appropriate besides the obvious genocide? Saying potato famine or blight feels like an understatement given it was intentional starvation
