“modesty” is a word that is and has been used to police women and what they wear. even if modesty is a traditional religious requirement, it makes no sense at all that modesty for women and men differ. how is it that a young girl will get scolded for wearing shorts on a hot day to the temple, while her brother will do the same, and as always, have his life accommodated to? how is it fair that women’s bodies will be engulfed in fabrics, dupatta and saree whereas the pandit priests will be excessively exposing their hairy chests and nipples? how is a dhoti (which does no favours in concealing ANYTHING) supposed to be “modest” in the same manner as a saree or kurti? let’s face it, modesty is and was never a principle in today’s conservative hindu temple culture. it is just a tool used to uphold the patriarchy so prominent in india. why would god care about whether or not i go to a temple in a burka or in a bikini. the temple was supposed to be about internal harmony, spirituality, prayer and faith. but in order to achieve this we need to start abolishing the control of our women, and instill the supposedly hindu belief of equality and balance. #radfem #hindu #sexism #feminism #patriarchy
