all good observations, adding forbs back into your pastures not only works those soils deeply with larger roots than those grasses. They accumulate different minerals and act like a living mineral lick for your stock. From the work of Jim Elizondo, cows dont graze like a mower and if you allow them to or if you then mow tall grass, you create a compaction later at around 4".

You're not wrong. There are studies done on this. Look up what caused the dust bow? It's because the grassroots were too short. They took out all the native grasses that went down ten to fifteen feet. then, with every new plant, they drain the nutrition out of the ground and never replaced it. That's why we're low in things like magnesium.
