Look if I'm homeless and a plain white van shows up and a city official tells me to get in the van, I'm running away

Then also get the shelters to let people in after 6. Set up places for people to shower and get cleaned up no questions asked

Does this handle panhandlers with physical limitations? I see them often with limb amputations that would make them unable to do this type of work

It’s a good idea, but no way would I get in a strange van under the promise of work. Especially if I was homeless. I’ve seen stories about vans like that go to homeless encampments and the people they pick up aren’t ever seen again.

I don't see how this can sustain itself though. every city already employs sanitation workers, road repair, etc. every city already collects taxes to pay people for these things. picking up litter is more like busy work, something you'd have a child do to earn a couple of bucks. so if they're paying homeless people meaningful wages to do unskilled, low priority busy work that frankly isn't worth the pay this can only economically cripple them over time, especially as it grows. how many men can clean the same park, and how often? and how much is that worth? there's obviously a limit and it's very low. you really can't just "create" jobs without those jobs providing real value that allows the job to sustain itself. in other words, if the person paying for the labor isn't making any profit from the labor thos is a money drain that can't last for long.

Sounds great, however the problem is that I’ve known panhandlers that make more then a $20hr job (he stayed in hotel rooms every night).

Universal basic income for everyone has been REPEATEDLY PROVEN to cost less than all of the paternalistic crap that governments currently employ. IT WOULD COST LESS to give EVERYONE a gauranteed LIVEABLE income including education and health!! This has been repeatedly proven.

Look up the program, a better way. We have it in Tulsa and adopted it from another state that was doing this program and I think Arizona.

In Texas, the way we treat Mental Health and homelessness is by incarcerated people. Many people with severe mental illness are on the street. They aren't getting in a van.

My issue is that people are paid a pittance for their time and energy and some rich AH benefits from their time and energy.

A job is great but there's so many other concerns w the homeless. Many need medical/psychological help as well.

Depends on the job. You try to offer a labor job you an old dude with bad knees and a bad back, you better expect them to turn that down.

But if he is only working 25 hours a week there has to be access to affordable housing or else they are still homeless
