1) Secure your Fire/EMT certifications before beginning the job search. This is kind of a two-in-one, but having both your fire certification and EMT license before you start applying can put you ahead of a lot of other candidates. Departments want people who are ready to work, and already having those certifications can open up a lot more opportunities. Instead of waiting on a department to send you through everything, get ahead of the game if you have the opportunity. 2) Hit the StairMaster/bleachers and work on your overall physical fitness and wellness. Being in shape for this job is about a lot more than being able to lift heavy weight. You need endurance, leg strength, grip strength, mobility, and the ability to keep working when you’re exhausted. Get comfortable climbing stairs, carrying weight, and getting your heart rate up. The better shape you’re in before you get hired, the easier the academy and the job itself are going to be. 3) Don’t walk into the job thinking you know everything. Always be a sponge. Even if you already have some experience, there’s always something else to learn. Listen to the guys who have been doing the job longer than you’ve been alive, ask questions, take criticism, and pay attention to how different people operate. You’ll even see firefighters with 20+ years on the job still learning from calls, training, and sometimes even from the younger guys. The moment you think you know everything is when you stop getting better. BONUS — Get your GOLDEN TICKET: Your Paramedic license. If you really want to open doors for yourself in the fire service, get your paramedic. Having your fire certification, EMT, and especially your paramedic license makes you significantly more marketable. Firefighter/paramedics are needed just about everywhere, and once you have that combination, you’re giving yourself the ability to be much more selective about where you want to work. It’s harder schooling and more responsibility, but career-wise, it can be one of the best investments you make. #firefighter #advice #fyp
