The expedition to the Dark Continent is one of the biggest mysteries in Hunter x Hunter, and it goes far beyond Beyond Netero and the Hunter Association. Long before the current expedition, Isaac Netero himself traveled toward the Dark Continent alongside two legendary figures: Zigg Zoldyck and Linne Horsdoeuvre. That journey revealed just how terrifying the world beyond the known human civilization really is. Isaac Netero eventually returned, but the Dark Continent remained largely unexplored. His son, Beyond Netero, later decided to continue what his father could not accomplish. With the support of the Kakin Empire, Beyond gathered a team of explorers and began preparing a massive expedition. Their objective is to reach the Dark Continent and uncover its resources, creatures and secrets, despite the enormous risks involved. But one of the most mysterious names connected to the Dark Continent is Don Freecss, the legendary ancestor of Ging Freecss. Don is believed to have written Journey to the New World, a book describing his travels through the Dark Continent. Even more mysterious is the fact that the book appears to be divided into an East and West volume, while only the East volume has been discovered. The West volume has never been found, leading to one of the biggest theories in Hunter x Hunter: that Don Freecss may still be alive somewhere on the Dark Continent and could still be writing his story. The Zoldyck family is also deeply connected to this history. Zigg Zoldyck, one of the few people known to have accompanied Netero on his journey, proves that the Zoldycks have knowledge of the Dark Continent that goes far beyond what ordinary Hunters know. His involvement raises even more questions about what the family discovered during that expedition and what they may still be hiding. And then there are the Five Threats, the terrifying calamities brought back from previous expeditions: Ai, Brion, Hellbell, Pap and the mysterious Zobae. These beings and phenomena demonstrate that the greatest danger of the Dark Continent isn’t necessarily another human opponent. Entire species and organisms there can be so dangerous that humanity has no realistic way of controlling them. Now, with Beyond Netero, the Kakin expedition, the Hunters aboard the Black Whale, Kurapika, Ging’s growing involvement, the Zoldyck connection and the mystery surrounding Don Freecss, the Dark Continent arc could reveal some of the deepest secrets in the entire Hunter x Hunter universe.
