It’s easy for the independence conversation to become consumed by everything that’s wrong with Canada. But that isn’t what motivates me most. I’m far more interested in what we could build. An independent Alberta would have an extraordinary opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past instead of simply recreating them under a different flag. We could have serious conversations about smaller and more accountable government, stronger property rights and individual freedoms, direct democracy, responsible spending, immigration that reflects Alberta’s needs, and keeping more of the wealth created here working for future generations of Albertans. None of that happens automatically with independence. We would have to build it together. And that’s exactly what makes the possibility so exciting. October 19 doesn’t make Alberta independent. Option 2 gives us leverage, begins the process, and allows us to find out what Canada is prepared to offer Alberta from a position of strength. Then Albertans continue deciding our future. This movement shouldn’t ultimately be defined by what we’re against. It should be defined by what we believe Alberta can become.
