@sambentley: Would you prefer if more schools did this? This Indian school lets the students pay the fees using plastic waste, instead of money! This is the Akshar school in Assam, set up by the incredible Mazin and Parmita, who wanted to find a creative way to stop the local village's toxic bonfires of plastic waste that were endangering their students' health. Each week, the students must bring plastic waste from their homes or picked from the streets. This waste is re-used in a bunch of ways. By filling plastic bottles up with waste, they can make eco-bricks to be used in construction. And they make flower pots, dog bowls, jewelry, and more! Students are taught to be self-sufficient within the school too. They repair fans or printers when they break, grow their own food and even build their own classroom furniture. And what started at one model school in Pamohi has now grown into 90 government schools across three states! The team also trains government school teachers under India's National Education Policy, helping ensure the model continues to grow long into the future. The school is a powerful example of how education can improve both community well-being and environmental health. #goodnews #india #education
