@theknightstale: Kepler-452b is a real exoplanet about 1,400 light-years away. It’s about 60% wider than Earth and takes about 385 days to go around its star. Scientists think it may be a rocky super-Earth in the habitable zone, which means it could have conditions that might support life — but nothing is confirmed. Would you live here? #space #exoplanet #kepler452b #earthcomparison #Astronomy
In 2018, Mullally and colleagues showed the original validation hadn't properly accounted for instrumental false alarms, only astrophysical ones. Long-period, shallow transits around Sun-like stars sit in exactly the region of parameter space where the Kepler pipeline generates systematic artifacts. Burke and colleagues followed up in 2019 using the final DR25 catalog and found Kepler-452b had the worst systematic-false-alarm-to-planet ratio of any confirmed Kepler planet. The odds ratio favoring the planet hypothesis came out roughly 360 times lower than the original 99.76% confidence claim. It no longer clears the 99% bar and is no longer statistically validated. The NASA Exoplanet Archive carries a statement on this.
