@dailydozemd: 😴 YOU COULD BE STOPPING BREATHING IN YOUR SLEEP… AND NOT EVEN KNOW IT. That’s essentially what can happen with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). During sleep, the upper airway repeatedly narrows or collapses, causing airflow to stop or decrease. Your brain briefly wakes you up enough to reopen the airway, sometimes without you remembering it. This cycle can happen many times throughout the night. 🚩 Common clues include: • Loud, frequent snoring • Gasping or choking during sleep • Someone noticing pauses in your breathing • Morning headaches or dry mouth • Excessive daytime sleepiness • Difficulty concentrating Why does it matter? Repeated drops in oxygen and frequent nighttime arousals can increase stress on the cardiovascular system. Untreated OSA is associated with conditions including high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, heart disease, and stroke. ⚠️ Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. But loud snoring plus witnessed breathing pauses or significant daytime sleepiness is a good reason to talk with a healthcare professional about evaluation. Sometimes, the problem isn’t that you’re not sleeping enough. It’s that you’re not breathing normally while you sleep. Daily Dose MD Evidence.
