This topic honestly breaks my heart. 💔 I’ve had so many people tell me I should sleep train, that eventually babies “learn” and stop crying, and that mothers need their sleep too. Of course we do. I know, I haven’t properly slept in over 1.5 years. BUT, not only as a mom, but also as a therapist, I struggle to see this as harmless. A baby becoming quiet does not necessarily mean they “learned to self soothe” and became regulated. Less crying does not always mean less stress. Middlemiss et al. (2012) found that during an extinction based sleep intervention, babies stopped showing the same behavioral distress while cortisol remained elevated. Maselko et al. (2011) found that babies who received very high levels of maternal affection had significantly less emotional distress around 30 years later, especially anxiety. More recent research linked early maternal contact and synchronous caregiving with later social and brain development related to empathy and attachment (Ulmer Yaniv et al., 2021), while maternal emotional availability around bedtime has also been linked to later attachment security (Bai et al., 2022). But I don’t need science to tell me what feels right when my baby cries for me. I’m not scared of loving him “too much,” holding him too much or responding too much, day AND night. Every time we come, we teach that tiny developing nervous system: when I need someone, someone comes. I am safe. I can trust. Babies don’t need to be trained out of needing us. They need to depend on us until, developmentally, they are ready to depend more on themselves. And THAT is how real independence grows. 🤍 #sleeptraining #attachmentparenting #gentleparenting #secureattachment #breakupwithnarcissism
