A billionaire just made the largest individual donation in American higher education history. But two-thirds of the money isn't going to the university's original campus. Citadel founder Ken Griffin has committed $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, one of America's leading institutions for computer science, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The surprising part? Griffin never attended Carnegie Mellon. He graduated from Harvard. And of the $3 billion commitment, $2 billion is designated for an entirely new Carnegie Mellon campus in Miami, Florida, more than a thousand miles from the university's Pittsburgh headquarters. The planned 35-acre campus in Miami's Wynwood neighborhood will focus on major challenges involving health, national security, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate more than 3,500 students, nearly 300 faculty members, and over 600 staff. The remaining $1 billion will support Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus. Half of that amount, $500 million, will go toward its School of Computer Science, which will be renamed in Griffin's honor. But the geographic choice is particularly significant. Griffin moved Citadel's headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022. His latest commitment could help expand South Florida's supply of highly trained graduates and researchers, a crucial ingredient for attracting technology companies and investment. Rather than simply funding scholarships at an established university, Griffin is helping finance an entirely new academic institution in the city where his business is now headquartered. Carnegie Mellon expects construction to begin in 2027, with the first students arriving in 2028, subject to regulatory approvals. The donation is not just a record-setting contribution to higher education. It is also a multibillion-dollar investment in where America's next generation of technical talent may study, conduct research, and build companies. And the most striking detail remains this: a Harvard alumnus is committing $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon, with $2 billion earmarked for a campus in his adopted home city.
