I was genuinely angry watching this cross-examination—and you can probably tell. Not because I think psychiatrists should be above scrutiny. They absolutely shouldn’t. Expert testimony should be challenged, questioned, and held to a high standard. What bothered me was the way psychiatric expertise itself seemed to be portrayed: as though the complexity of mental illness somehow makes the entire profession inherently unreliable. There’s a difference between challenging an expert’s conclusions and undermining an entire field through misleading or overly simplistic framing. Psychiatry has plenty of legitimate problems worth criticizing. But criticism should be informed by the science, not by exploiting the public’s lack of familiarity with it. And yes—I got angry. Because when you work in this field, watching psychiatric concepts get distorted in a courtroom can be incredibly frustrating.
