I actually felt so sorry for Hal after that episode. You’re out there playing the hero, while somewhere else, a crazy family is sitting around deciding that everything you own should belong to them.

The Guardians are basically just raising a “obedient Green Lantern from Earth” for themselves, because ever since Hal joined the Corps, he’s constantly been trying to uncover the secrets the Guardians keep hidden. He doesn’t blindly follow the rules if he thinks something is wrong, he questions the information the Guardians give the Lanterns, and that’s exactly why he has accomplished so many great feats. He’s not a “obedient soldier” — he’s a person who thinks for himself and is willing to go against the rules when necessary to save someone’s life.

It's crazy to me how many people don't realize the episode shows Hal and John are more alike than different. They both have almost nothing outside being a Lantern (as shown by Hal's house and John's upbringing).

They made Hal like a drunken,stupid, unintelligent jerk and in the comic books he’s a legend. I don’t remember the mom raising John to be fearless, while the dad is useless, overly afraid and washed out drunk.
