@cogito.rebellion: part 438 | most of who you are has been given away to fit in. the fraction is the point. not a little. not some. three-fourths. schopenhauer is saying that the self presented to the world, the version of you that has been shaped, trimmed, and adjusted to meet social expectations, is roughly one quarter of what was actually there. the other three quarters has been forfeited. not hidden, not saved for later. given up. the process is so gradual and so continuous that most people never notice it happening. you learn early which parts of you are acceptable and which are not. which interests are worth mentioning and which invite ridicule. which opinions can be stated and which must be kept quiet. which version of yourself gets warmth and which gets silence. and you adjust accordingly, not once but thousands of times, across years, until the adjusted version feels like the original and the original is no longer accessible. who was schopenhauer? arthur schopenhauer was born in danzig in 1788. he spent most of his adult life in frankfurt, largely alone, writing prolifically and waiting for recognition that came only at the very end. he died in 1860, aged 72. the essays, drawn from parerga and paralipomena (1851), contain some of his most direct and accessible observations on human nature. nietzsche, wagner, and freud all named him as a formative influence. #schopenhauer #philosophy #darkacademiaaesthetic #existentialism #dailyquotes
