Part of it is because Usnavi wasn’t really the main character originally. He was the narrator, but he was more of the Aaron Burr than the Hamilton. The show was initially centered more around Nina and her brother (yes, she had a brother) named Lincoln, who wound up getting cut at some point during the show’s development at the Eugene O’Neill theatre center where he finally figured out the whole theme of the show. I got the chance to read an earlier copy of the script and it was FASCINATING to see how it was tightened up for the eventual Broadway run. HATE the movie ending btw

Wow, I totally disagree with the suggestion that the ending is rushed — honestly no track of music makes me cry more reliably than the ITH finale precisely because of the pacing. The acceleration to the Champagne kiss and to the mural reveal seem like parallel musical discoveries. I think the finale is dramatically flawless.

i feel like the pacing Weirdly works idk. i like that it doesnt necessarily feel Final in the way that other show’s endings do, because its Literally three days in the life of what its like in washington heights. it hints towards a future ; when the sun goes down, “im getting a second date”, the salon ladies moving uptown. its very human i think, which is the heart of the show (even if from a This Is A Broadway Show standpoint it does feel a little rushed)

I also think it’s a VERY “child of immigrants who never went back home” experience to have this nostalgia for the place you’ve never been or were too young to remember, but eventually realizing where you live now is just as valid a part who you are as where your ancestors are from. The whole show could’ve been about that really, but there was a lot of other stuff going on, so we get the one song lol

Unpopular opinion… it rings true and hits harder for Latinos because we understand that feeling of being torn between two places. Seems like the people in the comments who dislike the ending are white. So maybe they can’t relate to that feeling deeply? Art doesn’t have to be for everybody. But for Latinos who have so little representation… that ending is so good.

I love the message (really underscored by the ending) of the show so much and will never forgive the film for changing it from “what is home” to the ever tired “follow your dreams”. I found the ending of the film therefore much more jarring than the show’s, since the dichotomy of leaving vs staying was replaced by following your dreams vs staying

Super super interesting thank you!!! Rushed I 100% agree, but also thank you for putting words to what I was feeling. I loved loved loved it except for that. It is super interesting that Abuela does have her own thoughts and feelings, considering most musicals would get her trapped in “old wide grandma” like you said.
