What you're seeing is the engineering principle behind an arch dam. Unlike a massive gravity dam, which mainly resists water by using its enormous weight, an arch dam uses its shape to redirect the force. As water pushes against the curved wall, the dam transfers much of that pressure sideways into the solid rock walls of the canyon, known as abutments. Think of an archway. Push down on an arch, and its shape redirects the load into the supports on either side. An arch dam applies the same principle on a massive scale—except the load is the enormous pressure of an entire reservoir. That's why these dams can be surprisingly thin compared with gravity dams. But there is a catch. The canyon itself becomes part of the structural system. The surrounding rock must be strong enough to absorb the forces transferred by the arch. If the geology isn't suitable, this elegant design isn't an option. So that curved shape isn't just for appearance. The shape is doing the work. And that's one of the most beautiful ideas in engineering: sometimes, instead of adding more material, engineers use geometry to make the structure itself more efficient.
