This narrative is so misplaced smh. And couldn’t be further from the truth. In an age of needless race swapping. We have a character whose ethnicity is true to the comics and nobody is upset. Yet the narrative is as if we were? He becomes green lantern in 2016. Not 1956.

Ive been trying to explain that the episode is about perspective. I see a lot of the argument starting off with that it got too racial. But its all about perspective. As comic fans we know the ring doesnt choose race. But John’s parents wouldnt know that. They see a man who is white that they feel isnt deserving. Especially the time period, this is something that was common then. They felt they had to raise John differently to become “deserving” of the title. But my one complaint of the show as a whole, is they make it seem like Hal isn’t deserving at all. Granted, they havent showed a lot of his past. But Hal is deserving of the title. We known that as readers. BUT because of their perspective, they see him as someone as undeserving especially because the guardians have now handpicked John. Hopefully i explained this well. But to sum up what im trying to say, i totally understood why the Stewarts were doing what they were doing with John.

the episode doesn't say Hal was chosen because he was white. the guardians explicitly doesn't understand earth's racial distinctions, and other candidates also failed the fear test. It's really a clash between comic-book expectations vs. the show's more socially grounded reinterpretation of john stewart. the episode is really asking: is john courageous because he overcame fear, or because his childhood taught him that he wasn't allowed to show it?
