@apss.preset: #NepalThe 🇳🇵🌊⛰️Causes of the Flood in Nepal The picture shows a very serious natural disaster in a mountainous area of Nepal. It illustrates how a disaster can begin high in the@Aligthmotion mountains and then become much more destructive as water, ice, rocks, mud, and landslide debris move downstream into villages. One important cause shown in the picture is an ice or rock avalanche. In the high mountains of Nepal, there are large glaciers, snowfields, and steep rocky slopes. When temperatures rise, ice and snow can become unstable. Large pieces of ice and rock may suddenly break away from the mountain and fall into a valley. This creates a powerful avalanche that can carry enormous amounts of rocks, soil, ice, and water downhill. Another major cause is a landslide blocking a river. When huge amounts of rocks and soil fall into a river valley, they can form a natural dam. This is sometimes called a landslide dam. Water continues to flow into the blocked area, so a temporary lake can form behind the landslide. The picture shows this process as a “landslide dam & barrier lake.” The problem becomes extremely dangerous when the natural dam cannot hold the growing amount of water. The lake may suddenly overflow or the landslide dam may collapse. When this happens, a huge volume of water can rush downstream in a very short time. The floodwater can become mixed with mud, rocks, trees, and other debris, making it much more destructive than an ordinary river flood. The mountainous geography of Nepal makes this situation especially dangerous. Nepal contains many steep valleys and high mountains. Rivers can move very quickly through these narrow valleys. When a large amount of water suddenly enters a river system, the water has little space to spread out safely. Instead, it can travel rapidly downstream and destroy roads, bridges, houses, farmland, and other infrastructure. The image also shows the Bhote Koshi River and several settlements along the river system. This demonstrates how a disaster that starts far away in the mountains can affect communities many kilometers downstream. People living close to rivers are particularly vulnerable because floodwater and debris can reach their homes very quickly. Heavy rainfall can make the situation even worse. During Nepal's monsoon season, intense rainfall can cause rivers to rise rapidly and can saturate the soil. When the ground becomes saturated with water, mountain slopes become less stable, increasing the possibility of landslides. Heavy rain can therefore combine with melting snow, unstable glaciers, and landslides to create a cascading natural disaster. Climate change is also an important long-term factor. Rising temperatures can cause glaciers and snow to melt more rapidly and can make high-mountain environments less stable. As glaciers retreat, they can leave behind lakes that are surrounded by unstable ice, rock, or sediment. These glacial lakes can become dangerous if their natural barriers fail, potentially producing a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). In addition, deforestation, road construction, construction near rivers, and development in vulnerable mountain valleys can increase the damage caused by floods. These activities do not necessarily cause a flood by themselves, but they can weaken slopes, change natural drainage patterns, and place more people and buildings in areas that are exposed to flooding. Overall, the picture represents a chain reaction: an unstable mountain slope or glacier can produce an ice-and-rock avalanche; the debris can block a river and create a temporary lake; the lake can eventually overflow or break through the natural dam; and a huge wave of water, mud, rocks, and debris can then travel downstream toward populated areas. Therefore, flooding in Nepal is not caused by only one factor. It can result from a combination of heavy rainfall, melting snow and glaciers, landslides, glacial la
